How about replacing slave labour with Internet Marketing? I have had my share of jobs that could be classified as slave labour the worst was being paid a per paper rate for a paper round that was too long to make money doing even if I had been driving one of those old Citroen 2CV's. The paper rate was set by the distribution company and they did not pay fo the commercial drops, nor any personal papers they wanted delivered. The boundaries of the round were set by them and they did all the selling. All we got was one free paper per night that could be used to prospect for more clients.
The terms required us to provide a back up driver and to deliver all but four nights a year. Living in Nova Scotia Canada it was the job from hell. I lasted nearly a year. In that time there were five nights that the local Mounties did not drive, but we did, we had to have the papers delivered by 7:30 am or we could be fired. Of course one night it snowed like no snow ever before and within an hour the roads were impassable. I followed a plow and managed to make it back to the main highway and thought at least I could make it home safely, but I was wrong!
My side of the road had been plowed but not the other, so as I was coming round a curve I realised too late that an idiot coming the other way was driving in the wrong direction up my lane! The inevitable head on collision seemed to take forever to happen and I was sliding like a giant puck towards him with all four wheels locked. The ABS seemed useless.
The inevitable happened and my car was written off, my life effectively destroyed and I was afforded no protection by the Canadian Occupational Health and Safety and Labour Standards. It appears that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms Section 15 which was specifically revised in 1983 to ensure that no group of people living in Canada can be made less than equal to any other by any law made by the provinces can be and is ignored even by federal authorities! There is definitely one law for the rich and another for the poor. Of course I lost my job as the result of poor performance. This despite 100% of my customers saying my performance was excellent (over 80% of them) and the rest that it was good.
I have had other jobs as bad the infamous commission only sales a euphemism for we do not want to pay even the minimum wage as the chances of making a profit are less than none!
